How to manage project updates, versioning and cloning?

Hi ,
I Have a good working project. recently my end user asked me to do some changes.
how does one deal with keeping the older version / source code.
do you just clone the project's folder and start working on the cloned copy ?

I'm just afraid of needing the older project's source files and then if I do changes they might be permanent,
on the other Hand starting from scratch is not really an option.

your recommendations ?

Use a code repository such as Tortoise SVN to help you keep track of your code. It will let you roll back to previous versions when needed.
