If you can't come up with ideas then you should not participate in any competetions.

You should write an algorithm that proves that given any plane separated into regions that the regions may be colored using no more than four colors in such a way that no two adjacent regions receive the same color.

Oh wait i got a better one:
A square is magic if each of the rows, columns, and diagonals add up to the same total. So, for example, the square

        Code:
            25 4 19
            10 16 22
            13 28 7
is magic, since every row, column, and diagonal adds up to 48. Of the nine entries, three (4, 16 and 25) are perfect squares.

Write a program to find a 3 by 3 magic square all of whose entries are distinct perfect squares, or prove that such a square cannot exist.

How about something that takes messages written in SMS-speak and translates it to English above a 5th grade reading level? It would be quite the challenge to capitalize sentences, fix spelling errors, put in all those pesky little words like 'to', 'a', 'an' that people think are no longer important.

Imagine how marketable it would be as a web component for forum sites, or even to cell phone makers. Type in a bunch of barely understandable things like "plz" "u" "NE1" "CU L8R" and have the recipient of the message receive "Please", "you" and "anyone" "See you later."

I guess this is no longer an open problem.

                    Those suggestions were difficult.
How about a simple: Prove the Riemann hypothesis.
