Hi Its depend upon which type of appilication you want to create.

QUOTE=pinky8]Jared, thanks for the response. Hmm... I'm wondering what's the learning curve for PHP and MySQL. I've never used them. I know Oracle well.

I agree with you about ASP, and another drawback with it is the codes are not shielded with users (that is, cannot generate binaries for implementing on user machine).

Since it's not a Web application, how can the program running in the computer at the front door communicate and send the orders to the computer running the same application in the kitchen?[/QUOTE]

Hello, I think you will be wasting your time and your friend will be expecting much from you the end result will be less satisfaction. Based on your basic questions I can realize that you are not in to software development. If some one to develop a POS system the best technology would VB, .net, Java not ASP. And the database would be MSSQL, Oracle, Mysql or access.

I know that Micros will be overkill if your friend restaurant is small, but Micros is the best in the world.

Try this less expensive system http://www.businessoft ware.com/restpro.asp I have not tried this but looking at their website I think it is worth to look at it.

You should use VB or JAVA... But i prefer vb because its easy to use, understand and to create rapid applications... ..
