What is ruby DBI(Database independent interface) for?

what is its purpose?do i need DBI when data is from a logging device which needs to be displayed in a webpage as a line graph?

The purpose is database manipulation. If you can get the data from the logging device without it, you don't need it. Otherwise it may be helpful.
