use of buffer() function

Hi,

I was browsing the reference manual to pick up some functions I haven't been
using up until now. I tumbled over the buffer() function. I know what it
does now, but I'm lacking a possible usage szenario.

Can anyone explain the benefits of this function and f.e a usefull example?
