Hi ,
Our current windows application uses postgre 8.1 while next release will be using postgre 8.3
Naturally when application is upgraded ..postgre is expected to upgrade
To support this upgrade we will be taking following path:
1) run pgdump & take backup of existing database
2) uninstall Postgresql 8.1
3) install Postgresql 8.3
4) restore database from step 1.
Just want to know if there is better alternative
As above process is not really an upgrade but just a fresh installation with data restore :(
It would be nice if we can straight away upgrade from 8.1 to 8.3 with some effort
However it does not look very easy in windows ...because :
Postgre 8.1 Installer makes its folder, shortcuts , services etc quite release specific
ie after Postgre 8.1 is installed there will be folder C:\Program Files\ Postgre 8.1
& if on the same machine if we install Postgre 8.3 it simply gets installed as a fresh installation rather being upgrade
& creates C:\Programme Files\ Postgre 8.3 etc ...we actually have two services Postgre 8.1 & Postgre 8.3 !
(Please Check out the screen-shot)
Which is a pain !
