Basic Question - Open Source DBMS

    Hello,

Can somebody please advice me, which open source database is better to go for a Windows system?

I have some options to go with:
    PostgreSQL
    MySql
    Ingres

But when I checked mySQL site, looks like they are charging $599/yr.

Please advice, if Open Source is not always free software?? ..and which DBMS would be cheapest and better to go with in my case. Thanks a lot.

Use postgres it is much faster and better than mysql, and of course is free

For personal use MySql is free, for commercial use you must buy a license for each install at 599. This cost is for every copy you distribute, but they may offer a discount on bulk.

I use postgres at work because it is a BSD license which means it's free in cost and free in use. I can distribute it all I want for free.

It also works great in my experience, you won't be disappointed.

I agree: I set up a few postgres DBs at my job and they've been working out great. It's easy to develop tools for and free!! My favorite part is getting to use PHP to build web-based tools to play with the databases ;)
