drivers to connect PHP 5.1 to sql server 2005

I want to connect to sql server database from php code.

OS: Win xp SP3
PHP ver 5.1.0
Database : SQL server 2005
IIS ver 5.1

What are the drivers needed for the connection to happen?
I downloaded the php_sqlsrv_52_t s.dll and tried with it. It doesn't work.I think its for PHP 5.2 n above.
I am not able find the ms sql srv driver for 5.1.
Plz help me out in getting the drivers and possible ways and prerequisites to connect php 5.1 to sql server 2005.
Also can anyone tell the difference between thread safe and non thread safe PHP versions.

I would just update my PHP version. the latest stable versions are 5.4.3 & 5.3.13

I think all you have to do is activate php_mssql.dll in your php.ini file.

check your php\ext folder to see if php_mssql.dll is listed. If not go out on the internet and search for it.

As Dormilich suggest however, it may be better in the long run to upgrade php. If you get php_mssql.dll to work, you will have to change to php_sqlsrv when and if you upgrade your php.

But for now it may be just what you need.
