There is no need to develop a new algorithm, there is already a md5 function in php. md5 is not a encryption method , it is a hashing function.

If you plan on hashing your passwords (which you should... always), then you should go with something a little better than MD5. MD5 is not secure anymore; it is to weak; to easy to crack.

I recommend using something like SHA512 or Whirlpool. Those should be secure for a few more years. See the hash function for info on how to use them.

If you are looking for encryption rather than hashing, try the mcrypt extension.

Keep in mind that there is a big difference between hashing and encryption. Hashing is one way; there is no decryption possible. Encryption, on the other hand, also allows for decryption; to reverse the algorithm.

For the best password security, always use hashing.

I can show you how to crack an MD5. I have the PHP code at home, I can post it if anybody is intrested.

It can crack a 3 letter password in a couple of minutes, 4 letter password in about half an hour. and several hours for a 5 letter alphanumeric password.

That's on a desktop machine, if you have a beast with quad core xenon with 8 GB RAM, you can easily crack MD5 hashes with it.

        Cheers,

        Dan
