If anyone has used or knows of a good shopping cart software for ecommerce do you think you can give me a recommendation? I would prefer it to be in php.

I'd go the full hog and look at Magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com/),
you just can't beat it for scope, breadth, and depth.

If you do go with it, expect a fairly steep learning curve.

consider Drupal with e-commerce module.
