what are the differences between the HTTP and HTTPS protocols, what interaction takes place between browser and server when HTTPS is used?

In short...
HTTPS is an encrypted HTTP request/response using a SSL or TLS connection.
The SSL/TLS connection requires that the server provides a signed public key certificate.
