I intend to a web based selection system for the first years (freshermen) as my final year project.Applica nts meeting the basic entry requirements are considered in their first choice programs, otherwise they are cosidered in thier second choice programs. How can I go about this? How can PHP be helpful? I SEEK YOUR ADVICE...

Firstly PHP will be good for a web based database driven solution to the project.
I strongly recomend starting this project with designing the web forms you will need to accomplish this.
If you have no experiance with Web Development then you may want to start in the html forums and get help making your form look write.
Then when you get that form looking how you want, then the PHP forums can help you plug this in to a DB.
So basically start something and the "thescripts " possee will help you.
But you need to have a problem which we can answer not a coursework specification.
So... in short, use the html forums to help start designing the forms for user entry.
