Could PHP manipulate PDF metadata?

I would like to construct a script that parses and prints the metadata
from a PDF file. This would include the creation date, author, etc.

These attributes are listed in the "document properties" dialog in
Acrobat Reader. I assume these values are included in any PDF
distilled from any program and not proprietary.
