    Worthwhile developing in PHP 5?

    Hi all,

I am about to begin a new project and am deciding whether to begin in
PHP5 with the beta release or stick to the current 4.x production release?

I am expecting to have the system launched in approx 4 months and
wouldnt be surprised if PHP5 final is out....

Which way do i go and why?

    thanks heaps! :)

Do you need any of the functionality PHP5 will provide?

I suspect the development of PHP5 is suffering from "Second System
    Syndrome":
    (http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms...em_effect.html) So I
    would be very cautious!

Re: Worthwhile developing in PHP 5?

      Hi Andre,

I am quite confident I will be able to complete the project with the
functionality 4.X provides. I think what concerns me more is the speed,
overhead and potential scalability. I should have made myself more clear
      before :/

That was an interesting point you raised of Second System Syndrome... I
havent heard anyone raise concerns of this in PHP5 but I hope it is not
      the case :/

      Cheers,
      Nima :)

Well, you will benefit from any speed and/or scalability improvements from
PHP5 as soon as it's released. you may want to make sure that you will be
compatible with PHP5, for the most part this shouldn't be a problem, but I
        would be careful with OO...

Stick with PHP4 then. It's plenty fast enough in most circumstances.

I think André's remark hit it right on the nail. PHP5 is bloated and
          promotes bloatedness.
