Hi.

I would like to install software onto my linux-based server so that I
can remotely, through the browser, view the status of the server and of
cron backups on that server. Do you have any suggestions as to where I
can find these tools?

The most obvious choice that springs to mind is Webmin. You can find it
at http://www.webmin.com/.
