Oracle Forms - Migration

Hi all,

We have an application written with Oracle Forms 5.0 and report builder 3.05. We are using Oracle 8i as a database. We have around 50 forms and 10 reports.

I'm in a process of analysing and evaluating to upgrade/migrate or rewrite this application with a new tool in order to convert it on a web application.

I have made few search and i found these 2 choices:
- Migrate this application to Oracle Forms 9i or 10g

Or,

- Convert this application to ASP.NET with a tool provided by ATX Software: http://forms2net.atxso ftware.com/site/Welcome.do

Based on your knowledge and experience, I would like to have a better idea about this issue.

Which method is the best in matter of cost (time & effort) and performance ? and what do you recommend ?

Please, do not hesitate to give me any another recommendation.

I had applied ATX for converting fmb to asp. however, ATX does not solve
many oracle built-in, business logic well. you can use some migration tools
to easily migrate fmb, rdf, pll, mmb to 9i/10g without much cost.

I have used the ATX Forms2Net tool to migrate my oracle forms (6.0) to ASP.NET and my reports also.

It's fine for the pl/sql code and the .NET code is very nice structured.

I'm thinking to migrate my reports also but at this moment is only possible to .NET Reporting Services.

This is an old post so I am responding to people who have this question more recently as I hope the person here already completed their Migration / Conversion / Upgrade. The other solution is to go with Oracle ADF Java.

Oracle's recommend path is to get off old un-supported versions of your Oracle Forms and Reports (2.3, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 6i, 9i) and get on to supported version (10g, 11g). Once you are supported, you can start to develop new code in ADF (Application Development Framework) Java. This is a really great way to go because ADF was designed with Oracle Forms developers in mind. It is a lot easier for a Forms developer to learn ADF then straight Java or .Net

And when your Project dollars open up, maybe you start to move certain pieces of your applicaiton to ADF. The best part is that Forms and ADF can co-exist on Oracle Application Server or Web Logic Server.

This phased approach is clearly the easiest tranisition and it can get you on supported software very fast. If you an Automated Migration Tool like PITSS.con to do you Forms to Form Migration, you could be testing the application in days. Most customers begin walking through the app with the users after about 5 days.
