    Oracle vs. MS SQL Server

    Hey Guys,
In your opinions, how is Oracle fairing the marketplace against MS SQL
in terms of market share? Gaining ground? Losing ground?

It is gaining ahead of Oracle and DB2 on Windows, but then again is
Windows gaining ground any more? (as a server platform - don't think
    so)

The TCO will be much higher, provided most developers preferring free
software seem to develop crap applications, and MySQL won't refrain
        you from doing that.

That's like saying going from 1 mph to 40 mph is a gain of 40 times and thus
is gaining faster than another car going from 100 to 140 ( which isn't even
a doubling of speed). Irrelevant statistic.

MySql is only a database not a front end tool.

The 'crap' you're talking about can be free or paid for, it depends on
            the programmer

.....but Open Source such as MySql is gaining ground faster, and will

At 1 point in time (not long ago), Open source was in its infancy.
Now Open source software is used by many companies, and a growing
number are evaluating it as they try to reduce their IT costs.

Prove it. For enterprise applications it is not being used. You want your
anecdotal evidence to be taken as fact; you should be willing to provide
evidence and sources of that evidence.

Assertions without proof, apparently> Microsoft contest the TCO of
                    Linux is lower.
But I don't think it is of any use arguing without because you have
embraced Open Source as your Gospel (Deliberate capitalization here).
Hopefull you will be prepared to pay for any claims you incur for the
disasters you are causing by using Open Source.
Any claim that MySQL is a *better* product than Oracle is utter
bullshit, if you compare the functionality. The only advantage of
                    MySQL is it is free.
However in IT, free lunches don't exist.

So you are naive enough to believe a puff piece by the vendor. You probably
believe in the tooth fairy also. (no stats, no independent source.) Its
like trying to explain a joke that someone doesn't get.

MySql exists in the market place and has many customers,
other Opensource products :- Apache, PHP, Linux, OpenOffice

I have been using Suse Linux 8.2 for over a year it cost me GBP40.
I have downloaded the latest version (Suse 9.0) for free, from which I
                        am sending this posting.

The interesting thing is I am now using Oracle (after 13 years of
Ingres) and using MySql at home. I agree that MySql is not as feature
                        rich as Oracle but
it still does its job as a database, and with version 5 just released
(for free) it promises even more.

You are correct free lunches do not exist these days, which why
companies are cutting costs in their IT departments 1) by moving jobs
to India and 2) by using OpenSource products.

                            Oracle opens arms to Mozilla
By Stephen Shankland and Alorie Gilbert, CNET News.com

Oracle wants its applications to integrate better with Mozilla's
                            open-source desktop software

Oracle is working on a project to let Mozilla's open-source desktop
software work better with Oracle's business applications, in the
latest move by the database giant to promote open-source software.

Oracle and Mozilla confirmed the joint project on Friday, just before
the next week's start of the LinuxWorld conference in New York, which
is a hotbed for Linux and other open-source software announcements.
Oracle, a Microsoft rival, pledged at the most recent LinuxWorld in
August to move all its developers to Linux computers.

The collaboration is intended to ensure Mozilla software, which runs
on desktop computers, can tap into Oracle software that runs on
central servers, said Oracle spokeswoman Jill Schroeder. For example,
Mozilla has an email module that can tap into the email server that's
part of the Oracle Collaboration Suite.

"We're still in the development stages right now," Schroeder said.
Oracle expects to announce the collaboration formally "in the next
                            year," she said.

Oracle has been an open-source software proponent for several years
and heavily promotes the Linux OS as a platform for its server-based
software, including its applications and database systems. Its work
with Mozilla is among Oracle's initial efforts to extend Linux support
                            to client-side programs as well.

Mozilla, which was recently spun off from AOL, develops applications
for Web browsing, email and online chat.
