I have moved this post to a new thread as the last time that thread had been updated was over a year ago.
Yes, as I said before, it's possible for anyone to become a network engineer with the right training. The place to start is Net+; you can look over the coursework online and study it yourself, and move from there to any of the free router or firewall solutions offered through sourceforege.ne t or freshmeat.net.
Specific configurations will vary, and you'll probably want to quickly find a Cisco book or two, but doing that will give you the foundation to pick up a proprietary OS config quickly as you'll map commands to specific ideas. -
