Network cable unplugged

Hi All,
I have a lenovo 3000G/410 notebook ,yesterday and day before yesterday i was surfing the net using it and it was running for more than 36 works continously.Aft er that when i unplugged the network cable and again connected after some time then it does not gets connected.The network cable unplugged error is being shown but the cable is fine as my friends are able to connect to internet using that same cable, but i am not.The light at the end of the cable to which we plug in to the system also doesn't glows.

So,please let me know what could be the problem, fearing the worse , did there be some problem with the network card inside the laptop which might have been damaged because of such prolonged use.

Need Help Urgently.

First of all, what Operating System are you using? (e.g. Windows XP, Ubuntu Hardy Heron or OS X Leopard) Please give this information in any such question.

Now, as you probably use Windows XP or Windows Vista, I'll try to help you with those.

First of all, you see the "network cable unplugged error" as you call it. Click on that with the right mouse button and you'll get a menu. Choose "properties " or "settings" or whatever it may be called - it should be fairly clear.

Next, deactivate the network connection. I know, this sounds weird, but just try it. Now, if your network cable is connected, take it out and plug it back in again. If it isn't, just plug it in. Make sure, it is in the socket properly (and that there's nothing else in the socket!), then reactivate the network connection by the same route as you deactivated it.

If it works, the light at the network socket should switch itself on, when it's trying to make a connection and stay on, when the connection exists.

In general, every part of a computer can break, but it's not very lightly, that the network card just broke after working fine for 36 hours and then switching the machine off. I assume, the connection just has to be re-established.

OK, I've not worked with Vista much, but I'm guessing, it's similar to what I described for Windows XP.
If you can't find something I described in my instructions, try the following route:

Open "My Settings" (or whatever it's called)
Choose "Classic View" (or similar)

Find your network card, choose it and click on "settings" or "extras" or whatever.
Deactivate the network card.
Dis- and reconnect the ethernet cable as described in the WinXP instructions in my first post.
Reactivate the network card.

Now, if it still doesn't work, we'll have to think of something else. In that case, choose "Start" -> "Run". Type "cmd", click "OK" and a DOS-like window will open.
Here, type ipconfig /a and press Enter. Then post the output here. (Please use the code-tags to post the output.)

I tried with whatever you told me but still then it doesn't connect . it shows a tiny red cross mark in the network icon in system mark and netwok cable unplugged error.please let me know what are the other steps to trouble shoot this.

And also please tell me how to know whether the NIC card is working or damaged.

Is the card built into the laptop or removable? Removable ones are more prone to hardware failures.

Was there any power issues? Weather? Lightening could short out your card.

into a command prompt, are any of the entries all 00s? or all FFs? Frequently if the NIC card dies, it loses it's MAC address and thus won't be allowed to connect to the network.

It might be the switch that u are using (port damage _ switch Damage)

check it if it is working well. 100 % is ur network card " I had the same situation on my toshiba sine 6 month)

But in the evening again when i tried connecting it shows the same eror network cable unplugged and then i changed the duplex settings to auto ,also to 100 mb full but again nothing worked.

And i am where , from where i started , i think i will go crazzzy if this problem persists.

But the same cable works for my friends laptops in the same house.

SO In my side I think it is your network card as mentioned above. If you want to buy one try the PCMCIA I did & it is working well(built in 2 usb 1 bluetooth) & it cost in my country around 22 USD also it doesn't use a lot of you laptop battery power.

Attempt the following at your own risk.

Remove all power of your computer. Use cotton ear swab, soaked in alcohol, clean the NIC's jack internal contact thoroughly. Wait one hour to completety to dry off and then plug all powers and reboot.
