Get a router, plug both computers in.
Make sure they are on the same workgroup and run the files and printers sharing wizard on both. You should be good to go.
Share the folders you want and make sure you know the names of the computers for communication.
After above has been done, test your configuration.
Example:
XP machine name: xppc
Vista machine name: vistapc
now if you want to access the xppc from vista hit Windows Key + R this will open a window in the left hand side bottom, type in //xppc and hit ok you should be able to see the folders and printers that you shared.
Let me know if this helps,

I already have a router and it use to work fine on my old XP and other XP...my ISP provider said connection is good and they couldnt figure out vista's uncompatibility issue. I tried the run //xppc and it said it didnt find anything, ive been reading up on this forever and everyone seems to have same problem but no real solution. Figure 4 on this website is what my vista shows http://www.microsoft.c om/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx
an unidentified network..when i hit "view full map" under private it shows my vista name, (red)-pc with green line going down to the other cpu name, Chrome..and another pic of what looks like a router but no green line connected to it. I disabled firewalls and done everything i can think of. Any other solutions you can think of cyber or anyone else?

[QUOTE=Purple]Hi,
can you ping between the machines ?
if you open a browser on either and address via IP address can you see the other machine ?
ie
all so, if you put the name of the computer in the a shortcut (in the target field) the computer ill open the shared folders of that computer.
ex
\\COMPUTER_NAME
this will work in windows vista\
added:
well I've checked all the firewall setting and found something strange.
the ip address on my labtop changes after i connect to another network and then reconnect to my own. this made my firewall setting go out of range. I was blocking the signal on one of my computers. This made my vista computer not see the whole network.
So make sure that all the ip address on your network fit your firewall settingsComment

I have struggled with this same problem. Although I am able to view shared files on my Vista machine I was not able to view files on the XP machine. The files showed on the XP file menu but I could not access them. After some work I finally changed the "permission s" setting on the Vista machine and was able to access the Vista file showing on the XP machine. Unfortunately, I had another problem trying to get the printer to work and had to use a restore point. Now I have the lost the file again. Right click file to share. Select properties. Select share, Select change permissions. Actually there are several options here. Surely someoneknows how to do this.Comment

Follow up. I was able to change the permission settings as follows: Right click the file on the Vista machine you want to share (to share with XP) Select Share, select change permissions, select drop down box, select Guest, choose permission level to be granted. That will allow XP users viewing the shared file to access the file based on the level of permission(s) granted. Now I need help with print sharing.Comment

Well I just got a new VISTA desktop and cant get my laptop to even show up in network map. I can ping between both of them! My xp lappy will not show up microsoft web site said DL new link layer protocol on the xp machine and that did nothing.....Comment

I got it to show up in the network map but now microsoft is telling me to right click on it and open but it wont respond to clicks?Comment

Make sure the computers are on the same workgroup name such as MSHOME and run the networking wizard on the VISTA side. Try to ping using command prompt by pressing windows key + run at the same time and typing in CMD then in the command prompt window type ping computernameuwa nttoping and see if there are replys. Share the printer before trying to connect to it and make sure the security settings are set to allow all users.

Hey,
Just wonder if you have your problem resolved yet, cause I am facing exactly the same thing at this moment. Able to see my XP machines on network map but cannot right click, able to ping each other at dos prompt but cannot connect. All firewalls are shut down already. Don't know what else can be done. Any help would be appreciated.Comment

The computer is running Windows XP and the LLTD protocol is not installed. Before a computer running Windows XP can be detected and appear on the network map, you need to install the LLTD protocol on that computer. For more information, go to Network Map Does Not Display Computers Running Windows XP on the Microsoft website.Comment

Thanks for the input but I did install LLTD on all XP computers. Before installing the LLTD I cannot even see them on the network map. Now I do but just able to click on the icons. All firewalls are disabled and I even tried with different routers but the same problem exist. ????Comment
