    Source Control / Versioning Software ?

    Hello,

    I'm hoping this thread isn't way off topic for this group; I have
    searched for a while for the right group to post this question to, and
    since I have regularly posted to .Net groups and this is the "general"
    one, I thought I would try here. So, I apologize up front if this is
    severely off topic and hope someone would redirect me to a better
    group to post to if this is the case.

    My company is looking into various source control systems. We have
    used Visual SourceSafe for a long time but find it somewhat lacking in
    some areas and would like to start exploring other tools. Next year we
    will be doing some relatively complicated "dual" releases where, say,
    the 1.0 of a product is out there, but the 1.1 and 1.2 versions will
    be in production. As a result, advanced merging and branching will be
    required.

    I was wondering if other companies out there have had a situation like
    ours (dual development), how they managed it, and what source control
    systems they used in their management process?

      Having used quite a few source control products, I think VSS can do what you
      need, but assuming you don't want to use it.. ClearCase is a pretty good
      tool http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/clearcase/ and CVS is open
      source and is used on some pretty big projects... http://www.cvshome.org/

      BTW, there is a sourcesafe ng, and they can probably help you get through
      what you need without getting another tool.

              I've used (and still use but not for multiple version support now) StarTeam
              for supporting multiple releases with good results. StarTeam was acquired by
              Borland recently and I don't know if they have changed the product or what
              the support is like now, but in the past it was quite good.

              ClearCase is a more powerful package but it also costs a lot more.
