works 9 user needs help with error

Im sure this question has been asked but I cant seem to find an answer I
understand. I have works 9 on vista. Everytime I try to open an attachment or
send a document from it I get an error. I have read about the converters and
even downloaded one but it didnt help. I dont understand how to open my file
in another version and save it (or whatever). This is the inly version I
have. This is the error: Works cannot open <path\filename> . The file may be
in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of
the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.
Please any help and be as specific as possible, Im not stupid with computers
    but I need detailed directions.

    Hello, Jennifer.
First, you need to get your question posted in a group for MS Works. This is
    a .NET programming group.
Here's how to find the group you need.

As you appear to be using a web interface, start here:

In the tree on the left, first open the English category, then open Home and
    Entertainment.
In Home and Entertainment, find and open the Works category and find a group
    there
    to post in.
