Sendkeys to target window?

i would like to know is there a way to send keystrokes to a target window?
if so please reply me the syntax and a sample. i tried using sendmessage but failed. i need to send a string or a keystroke like 'enter or esc' from the application to an emulator.

what i meant is sending keys or string or keystrokes to another application..li ke from vb.net appz to an emulator.
