Using external files for data storage

Im using Visual basic 2005 and i want to make the bulk of my data user editable in files such as txt or dat files (maybe even xml)

My questions is how do i get the data from the file.. into an array.. whats the cleanest way to get the information

its been a while since i have used visual basic and i am willing to read through a tutorial if you want to provide a link.. its just that i haven't been able to find quite what i'm looking for on my own

Of course, you could bind a dataset to an array.
