Empty folders after System Restore

No doubt ive done the same as millions of other people - deleted something i
needed! I made a Restore point first but after restoring found that the
particular folder i needed was indeed replaced apperently empty?
The files were photos probably jpeg not sure though.
Im using Windows XP Home with both serice packs.
I have used a couple of file retieval programs to see if that helped again
the files are found but cant open them, getting Invalid Parameters.
Im sure im almost there?
