    DotNet Freeware??

    Re: DotNet Freeware??

I don't understand much German but seems you are asking if .NET is freeware:
yes it is. The runtime environment, .NEt Framework, is and stays free and
you have now tools such Microsoft Visual Studio Express products which are
free to use (even for commercial purposes) for developing applications
working on .NET Framework. And these apps can be deployed to production
    environments.

Professional licenses are for Visual Studio developer tools / SQl Server
2005 versions (Pro and greater) and they are meant more for professional
developers. These developer tools just have more features, and they are
meant to increase productivity of developers. Still, that doesn't mean you
couldn't do professional work with express products, they just have the
    featureset for basic development.

So, licensing concerns the developer tools, not the runtime environment etc
itself (compilers and others, part of Framework SDK are also free).

      Block,

      In addition to Teemu.

There is not said that express versions will always stays free to obtain. If
you have it than you have it for free and all what has to do with that for
free. But it can be that it will be sold in future (not that I expect it,
      but to make it complete)

Why Microsoft does that, you should have seen the end of IBM OS2. A nice OS
but there were no programs to use. Therefore Microsoft needs developers to
build applications which can run or their OS.

The Express versions are created as learning tools, but with something more
than just that. Don't think this is charity. This is something we see in
nature as well often, it is called symbiosis.

      Cor

You are wrong, Cor, Express editions of VS will be free forever. This has
been announced like 3 month ago:

matters, but to make it complete)

          Lebesque,

Thanks, I had not seen this yet in an official announcement, I missed that
          probably.
