task manager problem

I have been developing windows services programs using
Visual Basic.Net on a Windows XP Professional laptop. Now
when I ctl-alt-del and select the Task Manager button on
the Windows Security dialog box the Task Manager screen
appears momentarily and then disappears.

Does anybody know what caused this, and how can I correct
it?
