Automatically move files to external hard drive when it is attached

I have an external hard drive that I use to store my media for my macbook. I was wondering if there was some way to set up a folder on my macbook that I could add files to when my external was not attached, and it would move those files to my external hard drive when it was attached. It would be like having an alias folder on my macbook that I could add files to when my external hard drive was not attached, and it would update the corresponding folder on the external when it got attached. I thought there might be some way to do it with automator, but I'm not sure. If anyone knows how, I would be very appreciative.

well, there is. Create a buffer back up folder on your idisk and you will see an option of routing it to the desired medium (in this case- your hard drive).
