Do you not already have tools on Linux that can uncompress your file? You have things like unzip, uncompress, gunzip, etc. I would try them first if you can as they are proven.

Or, depending on the flavor (and dependencies), you can try to use the built-in repositories such as RPMs for Fedora/Red Hat, apt-get or synaptic for Debian, emerge for Gentoo, etc...
