ls -l ???

I am a beginner. On issue of ls -l (long listing of directories). The first line contains
Total : 20
But the total number of files are only 4 why is display total : 20 what is that ??

I believe that is the total file size.

It's the total number of blocks used by the directory.

I will check it and say u sir. It is not the total no of file.
