Hi all. I'm wondering how this has been done: http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2013/10/13/russia/

I try to visualize a trip, like it has been done on the left hand site of the nyt-site (scroll down to see…). Could anyone guide me on how to achieve this? Or point me to tutorials?
