Web Page Pop Ups after Installing Newest JAVA

On the advice of technical support for another program, I downloaded and installed
the newest version of JAVA late yesterday. Ever since then I am getting unwanted web page "popups". There were 20! unwanted web pages I had to close when I sat down at my computer this morning. I've had a few more today. Can anyone tell me how to stop them? Downloading JAVA is the only change I've made. Are there
settings in the JAVA program I can change? Is this a common problem?
Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'm running XP Home if that matters.
    Thanks!

This is JavaScript, not Java; two completely different things.

You're probably infected by malware/adware of some sort. Which browser are you using?
