    Webpage problem

    Hello,

I've been having a problem using a webpage to pay my satellite
    television bill. The URL is:

There are two forms on this page, one for paying with a check and the
other for credit cards. When I fill out either form and click on the
'SEND' button, nothing happens. My modem indicates there is no
communication with their server when the send button is clicked. It acts
like the button is not hot. The 'CANCEL' button for both forms works
    alright.

The directv.com website indicates that my version of Netscape-4.78
should work on their site. I do have Javascript turned on.

I notified DTV of this problem but so far they haven't fixed it. I'd
appreciate your taking the time to look at the source code for this
page. Maybe you can find the problem.

    Thanks

Well, unfortunately, without a username/password, we cannot access the
    page you are looking for.

Why not try upgrading your browser? Are you in Windows? Possibly give
IE a try? Or, are you stuck using the given version of Netscape, due to
    administration requirements?

Minor point, but even if we locate the problem, we can do nothing to fix
it, as we do not control that website. And I've yet to meet a webmaster
who listens promptly to unsolicited notices that his code is broken.

        and my reply is:
I began having problems with Bank of America Online a couple of months
ago. They kept saying they knew there was a problem and would fix it
shortly. About a week ago I called and they said they would not fix the
problem. It seems that they like all the features of the new browsers
and don't care that their customers have to keep upgrading their
browsers and machines to continue to use their service.

I am on a Mac and I found a copy of Netscape 7.0 which was not easy. I
am now able to use their service. Since the latest version of Netscape
is 7.1 which will not work with my operating system, I'm waiting for
the day that I will have to upgrade operating systems just to keep up
        with online services.

Yeah... it is annoying.... but there seems nothing we can do about pages
that are tied to new browsers... except for refusing to use their service.

            You (we) already do.
Most commercial sites require NN7 or IE5+. Neither of those work on
            Windows 95, IIRC.
Many new programs only work in Windows 2000/XP.

Some things simply can't be done in old browsers. If a site wants to
please the majority of their users, they keep upgrading what they can
do. Unfortunately, that means using the newest stuff, leaving the ~5-10%
of users who don't use IE5+ behind.
I know it pisses off my collegues, who prefer Linux, as well. At least
they have the newer Netscape, though.

I prefer Netscape, but use IE when I have to.
I believe Mozilla Firebird works in Mac OSX. It also think it's NN7
            compatible...
