javascript and dll

I wanted to know if it is possible to call a dll from javascript in linux enviornment.

i know that it is possible in windows enviornment.

I'm not sure if it would be possible because usually only IE supports this (through ActiveX and low security settings).

PS. If you've got some sample code for Windows, perhaps you could help out in this thread.
