Help with jdk download and install!

I am unable to download and install JDK on my laptop for some strange reason. When i download it using the orange button that says "Download Using Sun Download Manager" it downloads but when i double click it to install it says "javaws.exe " has encountered a problem and needs to close. Were sorry for the inconvenience.

It says no matter what. I've tried completely removing Java from my system and reinstalling, but it will not work. If i click directly on the link instead of using the orange button, it will download and then when i double click it to install it comes up with the same error message except instead of saying javaws.exe it lists the whole file name.

Can someone help because i need JDK on my system!
    Please!

After you went through the platform and language selection choices did you select the licence agreement and click the ' jdk-6u14-windows-i586.exe' link? That should work ...

        kind regards,

        Jos

Yes it downloads completely but then when i try to install it, I get a pop up that says the file name.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Were sorry for the inconvenience. And then it allows me to send an error report or not. Thats what it says if i click the link directly, but if i click download using sun download manager then it says the same thing except instead of the file name it says javaws.exe

idk how to make it work!

I sympathize with your sentiments; I tried it myself twice on two different laptops (thanks for making me do the upgrade! ;-) and it all worked fine. I paid special attention to any peculiarities but found none. I'm sorry, I can't help you out. Maybe someone else notices something s/he recognizes. Good luck.

            kind regards,

            Jos

ps. I own two more laptops and I'll upgrade them tomorrow; when I find something I'll let you know,

FYI: I upgraded my last two lapstops this morning and all went well; maybe you can contact Sun's BugBase and see if you can find similar issues. If all else fails Aunt Google may be of help ... good luck.

                kind regards,

                Jos

Have you tried downloading and installing an older version? If that works, upgrading should be possible. Sure, it's annoying to do it that way, but it's worth a try...

That's strange because an upgrade usually is a simple delete and an install of a newer version.

                    kind regards,

                    Jos

Jos, you should know that computers sometimes do strange things. ;-)

As a matter of fact, such solutions have worked for me in the past. Not with JDK, I never that problem with it, but with other pieces of software. Also, you can try cleaning the registry after de- and before reinstalling. Often, that does the trick.

                      Greetings,
                      Nepomuk

No they don't; they do exactly as they are told. I bet it's the OP doing something funny which s/he doesn't tell us or maybe doesn't even realize.

                        kind regards,

                        Jos

Yes they do - they do exactly as they are told by the software they run, which is written by programmers who are also just human and can make mistakes. Ergo, computers sometimes do things they weren't intended to do by neither the programmer nor the user and that may be pretty confusing - to both of them. :-P

You are of course right Jos, the chances are high, that the problem was caused by the OP in some way. ^^
