Error 500 occurs with just merely typing 'localhost'

I know that IIS installation is pretty straight forward, but I couldn't seem to run my IIS 5.1 on my XP. :(

"This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying." displays every time I type in 'localhost' on my ie browser.

I have tried troubleshooting it by re-installing it (which I have done several times using different installation CDs) and have also tried re-registering it. None of those worked. Hope somebody could help :(

its possible its not the installation are you trying to run asp.net page, php or normal html?

i would suggest run a html test page first if that works and you trying to use asp or pgp you might have to link the .net or pgp modules correctly in the config. if you google this they have instructions on how to do this.
