    PC DOS and Windows XP

I am trying to write a paper comparing and contrasting PC DOS and Windows XP. I have tried to do some research on PC DOS with little information. Any suggestions?

You have to write a paper about the old command prompt dos and compare it to XP? What class is this for im just curious,

but here is a link with lots of information about DOS

if you are looking for other ideas for a paper something easier and more comparable would be something like comparing windows 98 to XP. You could explain how 98 has progressed to XP. Just a thought

Actually if you want to compare apples to apples you should consider comparing Windows XP to Gnome or KDE in terms of the graphical shell. If you are trying to compare the underlying operating system then you would want to compare the XP kernel to the linux kernel.

      Try http://kernel.org/

You'll do much better, research-wise, looking for info on MS-DOS rather than PC-DOS. The latter was merely a proprietary name for IBM's licensed version of MS-DOS that they shipped with their own PCs. While they had an agreement with Micro$oft that allowed them to do modifications of the source-code for their own usage, in actuality they didn't much of this, probably because while the walls of their mainframe/mini-frame house were tumbling down, they remained convinced that PCs were a fad that would pass!

You'll probably find that the Windows 98 kernel is more different from the XP one than XP is from linux I would expect. XP is a version of Windows NT (5.0 internally) and that was rebuilt from scratch using a team led by, and principally composed of, members of the old VMS team.

          PS. @Linq Absolutely.
It's ironic that the success and longevity of the PC is almost entirely due to the abject failure of IBM to stop all the copying of it. Without the cheaper copies, the PC would certainly have died in the water.
