You can visit Microsoft's Trial Software Center for free, but temporary, versions of a lot of their software.

There is also Sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) which can be used to replace many other things like that - Open Office for MS Office, etc...

It certainly would have been obvious if you'd explained it clearly in the question. I'm not really sure I've ever heard that FTP sites are quicker than HTML ones. There are very many issues which effect download speed but FTP v HTML? Not sure.
