Erm, yes but I'm not sure your customer will like the solution.

In a web application the Database server can be on any computer with a URL. Commonly the Database server is on the same computer as the Web Server. However it doesn't have to be, one of the hosts I use has the Database Server on a different computer to the Web Sever. What this means is that when I connect (in PHP) to the database server instead of using the host "localhost" I have to use the URL of another computer on the network. In theory the database server can be any computer on the network.

The reason your customer is unlikely to go for this option is that basically to work they would have to provide a way of accessing their Database Server externally to the company so anyone who new the right URL/IP Address and port number would be able to access the server. I suspose they may be able to do something clever with their firewall to prevent any external access to the Database Server except from specific URLs/IP Addresses, however since they believe their data is sensitive enough not to want to let it out of the company I suspect they will not want to try this solution.

And just as a rider to all I have said I would like to point out that I am NOT a computer security expert.
