    Toshiba laptop battery problem

I recently acquired this laptop. Format and install continued to fail until I removed the battery. Previous owner pirated the os and inform me that it would not start properly until battery was completely dead. this was the first clue. Since installing XP Pro and getting all drivers in order and complete updates through sp3. I finally tried installing the battery, such as http://www.accukorting.nl/toshiba-pa5013u-1brs.html . Every time I do the touch pad fails the os start up is slow and other drivers fail one by one. My guess is either the battery is bad or some driver or program for it is bad. My problem is I don't know how to troubleshoot this issue. Device manager does not indicate any bad drivers. Can anyone tell me what I can look for or do?

    lisya,

    Red Flag 1: Pirated OS
Red Flag 2: Doesn't run unless battery is dead (like what's the point, Laptop right?)
Red Flag 3: Format and install fails with battery installed... only works on mains-power.

Going on around two decades of laboratory and computer equipment service and repair:

More than likely your hardware has been damaged! Either/or the battery is bad, and/or there was damage to the PSB/PCB between the battery and the motherboard. There could also be additional damage to the motherboard if the battery back-fed into the circuits or if the inverter failed (maybe due to improper current conversion (USA vs European vs Indonesian). Those are the only reasons that there would be a difference between the hardware working correctly on mains-power vs. the battery.

Consider, if the person you bought this from stole the OS, why would you trust the person to have not used the cheapest least reliable battery out there, more than likely a "knock-off" too, or have taken the time to use a good quality power conversion and protection.

Pull your registration keys out of the software, nuke the drive so that nothing of your personal install is left, and go find the person that took your money.
