    replace motherboard

    is it ok to replace a g71 motherboard in a HP g61 laptop, and what effect would it have?

    I would be very careful doing so, I doubt they are the same.

    However HP has this awesome thing called 'Quick Specs' or 'Product Bulletin' (one and the same). You can pull up the QuickSpecs for both and compare internal components - such as motherboards.

    Alternatively, you can look at BIOS - HP tracks BIOS by architecture and date (for instance, their DL580G7 platform is P65 and a recent one was 5/11/2011). If that BIOS version (such as P65 for the DL580) matches between laptops then they have the same architecture and you probably can.

    This will lead to resetting of BIOS settings, and other changes, I'd research this very thoroughly if you are considering it.
