Motherboard or CPU dead? or something else?

I have a computer that would do nothing when turned on, including giving no beep codes. Everything seems to be getting power - the CD drive, CPU fan, and hard drive all start spinning. I disconnected everything from the motherboard ( it's an ACER N1996 ) including the RAM, CPU fan, all drives, ... and still get nothing. All that's left is the MB, power supply, CPU, and MB battery. I replaced the MB battery, and it made no difference. Still not getting beep codes.

Now, the weird part, after MANY times of trying to power on the computer just to get beep codes ( which never occur ), ONE time I got a LONG monotone beep. Turns out, it didn't like the RAM. I turned off the computer, put in a stick, turned it back on, and it started up normally, including displaying to the monitor. I then plugged in a hard drive, started it up again, and it hasn't worked since ( once again no beep codes ).

I'm down to thinking that either the MB or CPU is barely clinging to life, but 99% dead, since it worked for a 5 minute period. I've been trying to diagnose this thing on and off for quite a while. Anyone have any idea why it would have worked for that short time, but never before or after?

Aside from that, does this sound like a MB or CPU problem?

Just a follow up for anyone who may have a similar problem and see this post ...

The motherboard was dead. I took my computer to GigaParts, paid them $35 to tell me that my motherboard was dead, then got a new motherboard off newegg.com and the computer works great now.

By the way, GigaParts told me it would cost $400 plus to replace the motherboard, get a new case, and new RAM. They're theives! New case!? New RAM!? And motherboards can be had brand new for pretty cheap. Just a warning to anyone who might make the mistake of thinking about having someone repair your computer ... try to do it yourself, you could save a ton of money. I paid $54 for my new one ... part of that $54 was about $15 extra to get it quicker.
