How does one break into Java programming?

Hey, I've been working with Java a bit, and I think I'm getting the basics, but I want to be able to use it effectively as a job. Are there any specific things that every Java programmer should know? Are there any specific things that really help? Or any technologies that complement Java?

I've wanted to "break into the business," but I'm a bit overwhelmed. I've looked at freelancing sites such as oDesk, but for every job I find there already seems to be half a dozen professionals ready to jump on it. To get a job, I need experience, to get experience, I need a job. How does one get started?

As you can see, I'm quite green and would appreciate any advice I could get!

Being Java Developer you should have knowledge of Core Java ,Jsp and Servlets Technology and EJB (Enterprise Java Beans).Apart from that, if you want job in Web development then better learn AJAX ,JQUERY. Having knowledge of this technology will easily give u job in any big shot company.

Open your MS-Paint and go to "define color". You will see all the different color shades between yellow and green. Can you say if this pixel you just picked from the middle between the 2 colors is green or is yellow? Can you clearly make up a border where the yellow ends and the green starts? So you would just define everything after the 123th pixel as green, but someone else would not agree and define it after the 124th pixel or so.
Since evolution happens in many small steps the same way, you will just make up a border by some characteristics of a chicken. Let's say some bird which has wing size 123 is not a chicken, but with wing size 124 it is.
Then if a bird with wing size 123 produces an egg with a mutation in the genes that makes the wing size to 124, the egg is a chicken, but its mother not. So the egg came first.

(This is a simple example, not recognizing crossing-over)
