    Making an os

What exactly does it take to make an os?
    What language do you use?
I currently know C, C++, VB 6, and a bit of java and html.

Could anyone point me to a good book or etc. that will teach me to make an os?

First step to build your os is Building your own boot loader.

Make sure you can handle assembly coding. Brush up on C or C++. If you're using C++, be prepared to drop a lot of the initial runtime conveniences of C++.

Check out http://linuxgazette.net/issue85/mahoney.html. The link at the bottom to the OS resource center can be particularly useful.
