    Program You Didn't Develop

Hi any suggestions as to how you'd go about handling a program were given that was developed by an outside company? I'm new to the company myself and there's no programmer to ask for help with this issue and no one else knows how to code in C#. I'm the only programmer and this is my first job. Any info as to how to go about learning this program and the code in order to modify it? I'm completely lost. It's p2p, asp.net, desktop app, and uses sql.

My own strategy is to usually just dive in and start reading the code. Put some debug statements or breakpoints in to try to understand program flow. I'm also not above duplicating portions of the code in an outside environment (I freakin' love you Visual Studio Express Edition!) and play around with it.

That's my approach though, I'd imagine everybody has a different style to handling this. Try to work within your own learning style :)

How would you put some debug statements and breakpoints and what would that do?

Debug statements... like, generic output statements so you can see what's happening. As for breakpoints... I feel like that's a concept that can't be easily explained here.

Are you using Visual Studio as your development environment? If so, google how to use breakpoints and maybe take a few tutorials. Debugging is an important skill to have as a developer, so your time will be in no way wasted doing this.
