add reference to project vs. add reference to compiled code (dll orexe)

Hello, in VS2005, in the Add Reference dialog box you have a choice of
tabs. What is the difference between adding a reference to a project
vs. adding reference to a compilied .dll or exe from the Browse tab?

    thx

THANK YOU!! I've been battling this issue recently and it's nice to see it
explained in clear language. That needs to be updated, though, because the
directions for setting reference paths are not quite correct for VS 2005.
