network resource

Hi,

i would like to know what is the best way how to detect all network
resources (computers, printers,..) thru a complete network and all its
sub network ?

Moreover, how can i be sure that IP 192.168.0.1 is a computer and not a
network printer (for example).

My purpose it's to allow user to enter a network mask and to scan all
resources since this mask to all submasks available.
after that, it should display only computers connected to those
mask/submasks.
