ODBC - connection to 'pat' failed

    Hello all,

Having a problem with one of the Access programs we use to plan the production. Suddenly today when we click on any button to get information the txtbox appears 'ODBC - connection to 'pat' failed'.
pat is our Enterprise Resource Planning software which the Access is connected to.
I've checked the connection of the software and everything appears to be regular. I also tried with backup copies of Access and the same thing happens.

Any idea how this can happen and how it could be solved?

    any help is welcome.

Hi. That the failure occurs with your back-up copies as well suggests it is not an Access problem, but something amiss with the connection.

I would suggest that on one of the PCs on which you are running the DB you open Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Data Sources (ODBC) and check that the connection for the particular ODBC driver you are using is still valid. To do this you need to know what kind of connection you are using - see attached screenshot for example.

Most drivers have test connection facilities which can help you check the connection at your end. Possibilities: a password expiry on the PAT system; an address change (moved to a different server, say); a connection failure (which would likely lead to a long delay trying to connect, followed by a timeout and error message accordingly).

Let us know how you get on.

      Hi Stewart,
      thanks for the help.
I'm really impressed with the speedy answer.

Your suggestion was defenetly correct... not an access problem.
Unfortunately I don't have a test connection facility on this end.
So I contacted the guys responsable to check the PAT system (on the other side of the world) and possibly it was a connection failure on their side.

It's working know perfectly and if it happens again I know I shouldn't panic too much.

      Thanks again
