Odd symptom

Hi All,

This may not even be an Access deal, but I don't know where else to turn.

Sometimes, when I try to copy a record (double click on a file within a
database, highlight a record and click "copy", go to the bottom of the file
and highlight the new record and try to click "Paste", paste is no longer
active. And from then on, I can't copy/paste anything until I reboot. I've
tried closing that database, opening another...same thing. I can't even
copy and paste a file, report, absolutely nothing will copy/paste. Until I
reboot the computer. MAJOR pain in the ass!

Just now, I've tried it 3 times, and each time I try to copy that record, it
happens. Until then, I can copy and paste all I want. There doesn't APPEAR
to be anything wrong with the particular record I'm trying to copy, but yet
anytime I try to copy it, copy/paste is no longer available.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've seen posts on this from time to time and the consensus has always been
that, as you've surmised, it's not an "Access deal" but rather a systems
resources problem. When this happens, other posters have even tried opening
Word or Excel and tried to copy & paste with identical results. The fact that
rebooting solves the problem just support's the assumption that the problem
is one of system resources. Access can be a real resources hog at time!

Thanks for the response.

In further investigations this difficulty only reared it's ugly head after
I've transferred some data into an empty database from an old Foxpro
program. And, I noticed further that the file, when transferred, had some
controls that didn't tranfer due to an incompatibility with the way the
controls were set up in the Access file. If I tried to copy the first record
to a new record right away, I'd get this problem sometimes (probably only
when the first record was one of these "null in the control" records). But,
I also have a little utility that makes sure the controls have the right
kind of data in them after this transfer process and if not, forces it to be
a 1 or a -1 or whatever is needed. After running this utility, I don't have
the problem of losing the copy/paste ability.

So, it would seem that the problem crops up when the record I'm trying to
copy isn't set up the way it should be (no nulls, or whatever) and so Access
weirds out and won't let me copy/paste anything from then on.

Again, don't know if it's a problem with Access or what, but at least I've
figured out how to get around it and not lose the ability to copy/paste.
