    Lost table design defaults

This morning when I brought my Access 2000 database, some
workers had problems signing in on the Time Clock. While debugging I
noticed that, when adding a new record, the numerical fields in the
[Time Record] Table remained as nulls instead of defaulting to zero's.
Further investigation showed that all tables (There's only six is this
backend) exhibited the same behavior. New records started off with all
numerical fields as nulls. I tried Compact and Repair to no avail.
The Monday backup was also bad and so I restored the Sunday
backup. Luckily no one works on Sunday. So I was up and running. I
looked at the design of several tables and, and sure enough, there were
no default values. I looked at an older backup and tables and fields
were as they should be - with zeros as the default. As a test I tried
to add a new field to the bad database and the defaults were defaulted
    for me automatically to zero.
This database has been running in our factory for six years.
Can anyone think of a condition that would cause this loss of default
    values?
    Thanks,
    Hank Reed
